After initially being hesitant, Newcastle retirees Robert and Loretta Woolford are glad they opened the doors of their investment property to help those affected by domestic and family violence.
The former teachers told The Senior they taught many students whose lives had been shaped by violence and family breakdown over the past 40 years, through “no fault of their own”.
They’re part of a growing cohort of Australian landlords who are actively choosing rental applications from those who may otherwise be denied.
“On paper, everyone looks wonderful and, as landlords, you can become very selective because you want to protect your property,” Loretta said.
“But over the years we’ve realised some of those assumptions are unfair. Someone can look perfect on paper and still not work out.”
